Two grieving souls, one healing island

Arif (52), a writer suffering a long spell of writer's block, arrives on Gökçeada for a month under pressure from his editor, as part of the municipality's writer-in-residence programme. There his path crosses with Sonya (41), a solitary woman who lost her husband and son three years earlier. Caught between the inadequacy of words and the silence of grief, the two wounded souls begin to discover healing in each other's quiet presence — and the possibility of falling in love again.

When a storm makes Arif's writing house uninhabitable, he is relocated to Odeon Pension, the gardened stone house Sonya has run alone since the accident. Shared coffees, work in the garden and the island's archaic rhythm slowly dissolve the distance between them — even as the limited time Arif has left on Gökçeada casts a shadow over what is growing between them.

Director's Point of View

"A Spring in Imroz is a film about people learning to live with grief, and who — despite everything — seek healing through love once again. Rather than dialogue that explains the characters' emotions, gestures, repetitions and empty spaces become the storytellers. Gökçeada is not a backdrop; it is a living space of memory — a character in its own right."
